Old Man CB bought a used diesel Passat two or so years ago , and he wants to offload it for something new. He’s been looking at diesel F-Paces for years now, but keeps going “too expensive, too many kilometres, wrong colour”. Our latest phone call was us talking about them and vehicle choices. Will he eventually pull the trigger? Who knows! But at least he’s holding out for something he really wants (in either blue or BRG).

In any case, is he crazy for wanting one of these or what?

It’s pretty and it does have fewer electrics than its petrol equivalent.

I had a 2.0 diesel as a rental in Norway this year. It was actually very pleasant to drive. The 8 speed auto pairs very well and although it isn’t fast, it never felt underpowered. The turbo is also very audible, which I thought added some drama. I was way up north, above the Artic circle, so road quality was not great, but the suspension felt well damped and only protested on very b roken surfaces or holes. I didn’t have any complaints about the drive apart from visibility. Despite the panoramic sunroof, it s high beltlines, thick pillars, and general wideness made it tough to mane u ver in the city.

That being said, I can’t imagine paying good money for one. The interior touch points and design were good, but some of the secondary materials were downright cheap. There was also loose trim throughout the car, and a large piano black panel that was supposed to border the sunroof was just missing. A Q5 or X 3 feels way more substantial. Add that to the usual Jaguar reliability reputation and it’s gonna be a no for me dawg.

I rented a turbo petrol one when I was home for a wedding. They didn’t have the RAV4 I requested so they had to. It was ok to drive but no space in the back to carry anything, totally useless as utility vehicle.

Yes but a good kind of crazy.

I figure they spend 99% of their lives carting around no more than 1 person and 1 bag - like most CUVs.

I drove a 2.0L diesel XF a while back (XF 20d). It was good. Had quite a bit of torque but wouldn’t call it fast. Probably appropriate for a dad-car.

He thinks the 2016 X3 is too old. The heart wants what the heart wants.

If anything, he is definitely 100% Oppo. Quirky Color, Non-Mainstream Engine Choice, BRITISH. He doesn’t want to be able to see his identical car on his daily commute. And all the respect to that.
